Maureen represents individual, business, and community association clients in state and federal court litigation involving a variety of business, construction, employment, insurance, and warranty disputes. Maureen also counsels and represents clients before courts and agencies on employment matters such as discrimination, retaliation, enforcement of employment agreements, FMLA, USERRA, and wage and hour issues.
As an associate attorney, Maureen has worked with clients to:
• Obtain the dismissal of claims in various federal and state courts through preliminary motions practice;
• Remedy bad faith denials of insurance coverage;
• Obtain resolutions of varied disputes utilizing alternative dispute resolution processes, including mediation and arbitration;
• Successfully defend against professional liability claims in a wide range of construction disputes;
• Enforce copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property rights;
• Resolve warranty disputes under the Virginia Property Owners Act and Virginia Condominium Act;
• Litigate disputes related to the interpretation of homeowner and condominium owners association’s governing documents;
• Defend against internal investigations by federal agencies;
• Respond to EEOC charges of discrimination;
• Facilitate wage and hour audits conducted by the Department of Labor;
• Develop practical and effective employment policies and procedures; and
• Draft a variety of employment-related agreements, including independent contractor agreements, non-competition/non-solicitation agreements, and separation agreements.
Maureen has been successful in representing her clients both inside and outside of the courtroom. Recently, Maureen played a significant role in Rees Broome’s representation of a homeowners’ association in a federal lawsuit against the association’s insurance carrier alleging a breach of the insurer’s duty to defend the association in a lawsuit. Following an appeal to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court ruled that the insurer breached its duty to defend and awarded the association a substantial amount of its attorneys’ fees and litigation costs.
